FAQs About Freediving in Kalamata
The climate in Kalamata is exceptional compared to other parts of the Peloponnese due to the high mountains surrounding it (2,400m). The weather is generally very stable, and we have excellent conditions from April to December.
The best visibility is in the summer months, from June to September, when we can see the bottom plate even at 35m. 🙂
Since Kalamata Bay is protected from the most common winds by the surrounding mountains, the weather conditions are very stable, and most days are sunny. 🙂 Temperatures of air are highest in August, but during the season, the average daily high temperature remains above 28°C.
Sea temperatures in Kalamata Bay reach a peak of 28–29°C in August.
Every freediver training in Kalamata for the first time is surprised by its ideal conditions. Our sessions take place in the morning when the sea is calmest, with hardly any waves or wind—the sea is like a lake. 🙂
We experience a thermocline only in June when surface waters heat up quickly. However, later in the season, the water mixes, temperature differences become gradual, and the thermocline is no longer noticeable. The temperature at 100m is at least 17°C.
Kalamata is located in the Messenian Gulf, which opens towards Calypso Deep (the deepest point in the Mediterranean Sea). Since Kalamata Freedivers use boats to reach the dive spots, we are definitely not limited by depth. 🙂 However, we usually anchor our boats between 120–150m, which is deep enough for training world-class athletes.
Most deep training sessions take place at depths of 120–150m, which we can reach in about 7 minutes with our speedboat. However, for shallower training sessions or courses, we anchor the boat closer to the freediving center.
Kalamata General Hospital is located just 7km from the freediving center. In the event of a diving accident requiring evacuation, the diver would be transported by ambulance to the hospital in less than 20 minutes from the dive site.
No, Kalamata Freedivers offers beginner courses designed for complete newcomers.
While in Kalamata, you shouldn’t miss exploring the historic Old Town and Castle for stunning views. After diving, you can relax on the beautiful Kalamata Beach and enjoy the famous Kalamata olives and fresh seafood at a seaside taverna.
